Peaks Of Otter
At Milepost 86 along the Blue Ridge Parkway, twin mountain peaks rise to an elevation of 4200 feet. Since the days of Thomas Jefferson, the Peaks of Otter has been a popular location to enjoy magnificent scenery and beautiful sunrises. Overlooks along the parkway provide ample opportunities for leisurly viewing. (540) 586-4357

Bedford City County Museum
Housed in a Masonic Building built in 1895, museum exhibits and memorabilia recount the history of Bedford from early native American times up through the mid-20th century. An extensive genealogy library is also available at the museum.

Bedford Farmers Market
Located on Washington Street in downtown Bedford, the Farmers Market offers fresh, home grown fruits and vegetables, locally produced honey, crafts and quilts. (540) 586-2148

Liberty Lake Park
Liberty Lake is the hub of recreational activities for Bedford. The sixty acre park provides a 2.5 acre stocked lake for fishing. Also features ball fields, basketball, racquetball, and tennis courts! Skateboard pod, roller skating, a walking loop, volleyball pits, picnic shelters, and a nationally recognized handicap hiking trail. (540) 586-7161

Longwood Cemetery
Longwood is one of Bedford's first cemeteries, and some of the best examples of cemetery art available are found here. The Monument of Valor marks the final resting place of a number of Civil War veterans. (540) 586-7161

Natural Bridge

Smith Mouthain Lake State Park
Swimmers and sunbathers alike head for the sandy beach at Smith Mountain Lake State Park as the weather warms into summer. With over 16 miles of shoreline, the State Park offers a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities including swimming, hiking, camping, picnicing, and boating. Rangers present interpretive programs which instruct visitors, particularly children, on the importance of protecting the environment. (540) 297-6006

New London Academy
Chartered in 1795 as a private boys school, this facility was attended by Francis Eppes, grandson of Thomas Jefferson. The building now serves as a Bedford County elementary school, but the Academy museum is open for tours. (540) 525-2177

Appalachian Trail
Winding through the Washington/Jefferson National Forest and across the Blue Ridge Mountains, this historic and scenic trail attracts hikers of all ages. Wildflowers abound along the trail which can be accessed at milepost 91 as well as a number of other parkway mileposts. (540) 586-4357

Washington / Jefferson National Forest
The 690,000 acre national forest extends for 218 miles through the Blue Ridge and Southern Appalachian Mountains. Elevations range from 600 to 5729 feet throughout the park, and a wide variety of trees, flowering vegetation, and wildlife thrive here. A major forest wildlife habitat for more than 160 kinds of birds. Hunting and fishing are allowed with required National Forest Stamp. Big game include deer, bear, and turkey. (540) 291-2189

Sedalia Center
Set at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this regional, non-profit center presents special events in the arts, ethnic cultures, environmental awareness, health, and inner development.
